How to Twitter?

This week’s “Quick Tip” of the week is really not teaching you anything, as we are hoping to learn from you.

As many of you know we are still very new at this Twitter thing, and to be honest we still really don’t know what we are doing when it comes to utilizing Twitter.

Since we added our Twitter account we have tweeted several of our posts, as well as tweeted many blog posts that we have read on other sites. But beyond that, we are a little lost and would love some help so we can catch up with you 21st century movers and shakers. I am sure there has to be some of our readers that are in the same shape as us, but are just afraid to ask for help.

How to Twitter I honestly have no idea what the best way to actually check for new tweets is? Do most of you have your Twitter account hooked up to your phone or do you just post and check your tweets from Twitter’s home page? I am worried if I connect it to my phone that I will be bombarded with tweets that I can not keep up with, as well as go over my monthly airtime usage on my phone.

Also, as of me writing this… we are only following 35 people. How do you possibly keep up with tweets if you are following hundreds or even thousands of people? I just don’t get it. How often do you check your account… every few minutes, every half an hour, every hour?

How about posting on Twitter? How often do you post and is it usually business related, or do you tell people when you are eating and sleeping as well? If so, do people really want to know that stuff?

I just don’t know what is the best way to utilize Twitter?

Can you please give us some pointers in the comment section below? (The more comments the better)

I’ve heard a lot of people said that Twitter is good in bulding community, it’s just like email marketing. But I’ve yet to figure out how to communicate with the followers because I’ve actually tried to do it but seemed not effective. Anyway, I do like to learn something new here from others’ comments too. :)

Yes Doug, I’ve seen many people made money by using Twitter, so I would like to learn more about it and try to make some money from Twitter too. I believe that Twitter helps in driving more traffic to our blogs too. :D

The first thing to do is get Tweetdeck downloaded. Then create some groups in there, and as your followers grow, you can cope easily with the numbers.
For the rest, just be natural, interact with people, and OCCASIONALLY post links to your own stuff.
    Good luck!

Thanks Mike. So I need to download Tweetdeck. I want to ask you a bunch of questions about it, but I guess I should wait until I know how it works first though :)

One question… how often do you check it each day?

I still haven’t found the full potential in Twitter. I publish my posts every day, sometimes I tweet about a Hiburrito WOP and sometimes I just Tweet anything. But I can tell that 99% of the times I don’t see any replies.

Like Mike said above, download TweetDeck. It’s a great little piece of software that just makes your Twitter life so much easier.

When you post a shortened link check how many clicks it gets. (I use bit.ly). Then just use trial and error to find the best times of day to post link to get maximum clicks.

Just a couple of things I’ve found useful. Hope it helps. :)

So many things you can do with twitter. So many things you shouldn’t do. Here is a couple of could things I do. I use twitter to track what I am doing almost like a mini log or time keeper for yourself and activites.

Time and activity tracking don’t always do this. I do Reading, Writing shotting video etc. Working on the plan whatever. It helps me loosly keep track of time and activities in one place. Sometimes I will do a tweet before I start working on something and once I am done.

Cool thing is that I can go back to it if I see a spike or something to see what I did. I also throw in some comments about the kids and how I am feeling from time to time to keep it real.

I also like to thank people via twitter, it easy and nice to do. I think I have a draft post on this how topic will have to finish it and share.

    Doug,

To be honest, I have a thousand some followers on Twitter, and overtime have come to follow a thousand or so as well. Even with so many followers/people I am following, I rarely use Twitter. I only use it to Tweet posts I read that I found very interesting. I will occasionally Tweet a good post of mine.

All in all, I find Twitter kind of useless. Everyone is on there with one goal, and that is to have more followers.

Tweetdeck is essential. Once you have it running in the background you will be notified of all incoming Tweets. The beauty of it is that you can filter all the nuisance Twitterers so that only those that you are truly interested in get through.

I do ok with Twitter, it’s more about building a community than it is just tweeting really.

If your going to be a serious Twitter user you will need some tools to help make the experience a little more enjoyable, Seesmic or Tweet Deck of course make that simple.

Than if you have a cell phone like a Blackberry you can grab Uber Twitter (have it on my site) which allows you to send picture tweets, retweet, reply and anything else you can think of right from your cell phone.

    Here is a quick tip.
When you follow people for the first time, Tweet that your following @extremejohn for example. “I am now following @extremejohn who posts excellent tips for newbie bloggers.”

Doing so will show your tweet in their time line as well as their Tweet Deck or Seesmic, if you don’t get a thank you or a response or anything from that person after a few days. Chances are that person isn’t worth the follow.

Well, I’m with ya on this one! I happen to be a big fan of Twitter, I really wasn’t at first but now I tweet almost daily, but when it comes to using it for online marketing, I really find it useless.

I tweet my posts once in a while, but not very often. I’m always tweeting other interesting little things that happen daily or just random thoughts.

I also unfollow anyone that posts links constantly as I find it very spammy and annoying!

I love twitter for personal use, but I don’t like using it for promotional purposes.

Also, to keep up with the people you follow, you can install twitterfox etc, There are add ons to your browser so you don’t HAVE to visit the twitter site to see any updates. You see it automatically at the bottom of your browser while you work. And you can also tweet from there.

I’m following around 1,300 people and have almost 2,000 following me. I use TweetDeck, which you saw Sire mention, and I have it divided into people I need to make sure I see what they’re saying, people writing me or mentioning my name, and everyone else. I also have it set to show me the newest 300 posts whenever it updates, and I don’t worry about the rest. I tend to speed read, so when I’m ready, I can read through a bunch of messages pretty quickly and see what needs to be shared and what I want to comment on. Then I get back to business.
