Everyone knows that to really start making money online you are going to need to build yourself a subscriber list… right?
Well last week I wrote a post titled, “5 Best Bribes to Build Your Subscriber List”, which listed 5 different things you could use to bribe your readers into joining your subscriber list. In the comments section there were some of you that wanted to learn the basics of setting up the entire process of building a subscriber list without having to pay a 3rd party provider like Aweber.
Well we have been using Aweber for many years now and have never tried to set-up a free service because we love Aweber and their reliability, and there is no way a free service can duplicate their delivery capabilities. But I did say that I would post a way to do it, so I spent several hours scouring the web and asking people for their solutions. I found it amazing that there weren’t more free solutions out there.
I finally did find a solution that should work. It is called, Your Mailing List Provider” and they are actually are a really cool service. They are not a full-blown autoresponder company like Aweber, but more of a mailing list manager and should work for building a simple subscriber list.
The major concern in my search was finding a solution that was FREE, and Your Mailing List Provider is free to start. They are also very reasonably priced when you move up to their Pro, and Pro-Plus version. The only major differences I see in the free version versus the paid ones is you don’t get any of the tracking features with the free version, you cannot manually add subscribers, and it is only free until you get your first 1000 subscribers. After that, you will have to move up to one of the other versions, which run only $3.75 per month for the Professional Version and $5.00 per month for the Professional Plus. Hopefully when you have 1000 subscribers you should be earning a lot more than that per month, so the upgrade cost shouldn’t be too hard on you.
So let’s walk through the steps for setting up you first mailing list. The first thing you are going to need to do is sign-up for a free account. You can signup here.
As this is a follow-up to my “5 Best Bribes” post, I am assuming you are going to want to give away some sort of BRIBE to entice your reader to subscribe. Since this is not an autoresponder service we will have to do it a little differently than we normally would. The way I would usually set it up would be that once the person signs up and confirms their subscription, they would receive an autoresponder message with a link to their ebook, or I might even send it as an attachment in that email. For this site we are actually giving away an entire free course that is delivered over a 2-week perid. Well we cannot do that here, so we are going to need to create a download page where the user will be redirected to once they subscribe. That should do the trick.
1) Create a free account – YourMailingListProvider.com
2) Create an eBook (bribe) and upload to server
3) Create a “Password Protected” Download Page
4) Create a Subscription Box
5) Upload Code to Your Blog
6) Test
To help make this easier on all of you out there, I decided to create a video walking you through the process. After I completed the video I realized that I could have done it a little differently, but I spent SO MUCH TIME creating the video that I didn’t have the energy to redo it.
The one thing that you don’t have to create is the “Password Protected” download page, but I actually like having the ebook protected myself. You can do it that way, but you could also send the link to your eBook in the “Welcome Email”… it is up to you. Other than that step, everything else is fine.
For some reason (which I know why) this video is not as clear as my last one, so I suggest you double-click on the video and watch it on YouTube in HIGH DEFINITION. Don’t forget to click the HD button. (sorry for the inconvenience)
Again, let me say that I have never used this service before, so I make no guarantees about anything. You guys asked for a “Free Solution” and this is what I was able to come up with.
If anyone has used this service and could give us some feedback in the comments section below, that would be awesome. Plus, if you have any better suggestions, we would love to hear about them as well.
Also, if any of you try this, please follow-up with us to let us know how it works

Doug,
Thanks for taking the time and putting together this amazing tutorial on how to start a free subscribers list.
Seems after the 1000 mark (which I will get to) you have to pay anyways. Sad to say but perhaps awebber is the best way to go.
You know I was thinking more along the lines of hosting my own subscriber software. See I have a really nice Dedicated Server coming so perhaps what I’m looking for is awebber server software to run my own entire subscribers list and software.
I just can’t believe people are paying monthly fees to use these subscriber services.
I didn’t get to watch the video yet as I am at work but I will re visit when I get home after dinner.
For putting this together free and for me I would like to offer you a free blog roll link. I have added it to my blogroll if you want different text please let me know.
Thanks,
Brian

You are welcome. One advantage of using a service like Aweber versus hosting you own autoresponder is their ability to get emails through to the end user. Also, if you are hosting the autoresponder on a shared server there is a chance that someone else on that server might be blacklisted for spamming or worse and could get everyone on that server blacklisted. If you are getting you own dedicated server… that would not be as big an issue.
Thank-you very much for the Blogroll listing… I really do appreciate it. If you could change it to Making Money Online versus Make Money Online that would be awesome. I am trying to move up in Google for those keywords. Again… much thanks for that Brian!

Alright I’ll change the blog roll ASAP!
Also if you submit it over at blogengage I’ll add it to the new “featured Article” spot I added in the sidebar!

That’s great! I was thinking about getting AWeber in several months, once I’ll finish my e-book, but I might finally get interested in this Free autoresponder!
By the way, I noticed that you were using Ninja Affiliate Plugin and was wondering if it was making you earn more money from affiliate products than before, I was about to purchase this plugin, but felt it wasn’t the right time to get it, especially because there is not 50% off offer at the moment.
Do you use autoblogged plugin? It’s a great plugin to automatize your blog.
Doug Dillard on Wed, 29th Jul 2009 3:15 pm
We actually have not used the Ninja Affiliate Plugin… but I have read a lot about it and it seems to be an excellent product.
Benjamin Cip on Thu, 30th Jul 2009 4:40 am
oh I though you were using the ninja affiliate plugin as you promote it. Is this autoresponder free for just one month? I’m afraid that once I built my list, this autoresponder will stop being available for free, and then will have to pay to keep my current list… As I would prefer using aweber, I don’t know if I should try this free autoresponder…
Doug Dillard on Thu, 30th Jul 2009 9:44 am
Usually if I review a product, I will purchase it first, unless someone sends it to me for free. But as far as banner ads, I definitely have not purchased every product we promote.
As for “Your Mailing List Provider”, it is not an autoresponder service, as it does not allow you to send out a series of autorespond messages. As far as the cost, it is free for up to your first 1000 subscribers… after that you would need to move to at least their pro version which is $3.75 per month.

Doug, That was a great step by step tutorial and I really appreciate the time and effort to put that together. I learned a ton from the video and I will be testing it out. I have to write an ebbok first. I have started one but it is far from completed. I will have to work on it this weekend and get moving on this. I am assuming that you can just copy the image url before the code and it will display the ebook cover, right?
Doug Dillard on Wed, 29th Jul 2009 4:10 pm
Thanks for the compliment! Yes, you can make the subscription box look however you like.. you just have to play around with the html.

You touched on it just a bit but you know I like IMwithJoe.com. He has been able to get me over to his site because of that Aweber approach. He is a unique person to just watch and I think that a mailing system totally helps him get the word across about a few sponsors when he gets the chance to. I’m curious, have you seen the tools that Aweber has to offer, the stats are pretty tight.

We have been using Aweber for MANY years now and love them. I just wrote this post for some readers who asked me for a free solution.

I tested out a free deal like this a couple of weeks ago with Mail Chimp or something like that, I will have to give this one a peek. Mail Chimp was too slow for me.

There’s a fine line to balance here. Should one go with the free service, and deal with the drawbacks, and then have to switch over or start paying at 1000 users, or should one just bite the bullet and get the superior service off the bat? I’m not sure. I want to have a mailing list soon, so I have to make my decision soon, and this article will definitely help me do that, so kudos to you, Doug.

Doug,
Thanks for the info. I need to get a auto-responder on my action list of things to do. Aweber is just so highly recommended that I would hate to start out on anything else – even if it is free.
