Beta Testing New Traffic Monetization Program

First off… I want to apologize for not getting this post out earlier, but I was busy playing around all day with what I am about to show you, and I just couldn’t find the time to write anything.

One of the good things, as well as one of the bad things that happens when you run a business (online or off) is you get contacted by all sorts of people trying to sell you on something… either a must have product or service of some kind.

Well yesterday I was contacted by this guy offering me to beta test their new traffic monetization system. To be honest I really wasn’t too interested, but I checked them out anyway. Since this site is about making money online, I figured I should test out as many different ways as I can to make money online and report back to you guys if they work or not.

The program is basically an advertising revenue sharing program, similar to Adsense, but with a cool twist. With this you place keyword text links that you choose right on your website. You can choose high paying keywords if you like, but for my test I chose keywords I know my readers are actually searching for. When a visitor clicks on one of the text links, relevant ads are then displayed right on your website. The site owner then earns money each time a user clicks onto an advertiser’s link.

When I was asked to test this program, the guy was hoping I was going to test it on MakingMoneyOnline.com, but this site is very new and not much traffic comes from search engines. It gets some, but not a lot and I know programs like Adsense get a lot more clicks from people coming from search engines. I think the reason is they are already in a clicking mood, but I am not sure. I just know that is the way it works.

Mira Mesa Traffic ChartNow on the other hand, we do have a site that gets a majority of it’s traffic from search engines. That would be our community website MiraMesa.com. You can see in that pie chart that over 82% of the traffic comes directly from search engines… which seems like the perfect site to test this traffic monetization program.

Now implementing the program was pretty simple. Once you sign-up you have to list the sites that you plan to use it on. Since I originally wasn’t planning on testing it on MiraMesa.com I had to wait a couple hours until it was approved.

Mira Mesa Search TermsOnce approved it was fairly easy to set up. You need to create your text links for whatever search terms you like. I just went into my Google Analytics and I looked for what keywords people were using to find our site and I used several of those, and then I threw in some more that I knew people would be interested in… like Mira Mesa Real Estate, Apartments, etc…

That’s a screenshot of the text links that we are using on MiraMesa.com. I have them displayed right on the top of our sidebar so it is one of the first things people see when they go to the site, so we are hoping they get a lot of action, but we will have to wait and see.

The one other thing you have to do to make the system work is create a search results page. Unfortunately it is not setup to work with Wordpress yet, so I created a simple html page with basically just a header and then inserted the code that they provided and uploaded to my server. That was it. It is not beautiful or anything, as I just wanted to get it up, but it will work for this test. If it ends up being profitable I will make it look much better. You can see what the results page looks like below.

Mira Mesa Search Results

So does it make any money? I have no idea as I just installed it… but I will let you know in a couple of weeks. I can definitely see it having potential, and I have a few niche sites in mind that I think this will do awesome. I am not sure if it is the perfect fit for all blogs… but I will know more after I run my test.

He did show me some examples of other sites that are testing it and they are actually what sold me on trying it.

If you are interested in testing this out too, send me an email and I will put you in touch with the owner. To be accepted your site needs to be getting a pretty good amount of traffic, otherwise they will probably not accept you. It is still in the beta testing stage so they are not ready for the whole world to sign-up just yet.

So what do you guys think of this? If it ends up paying well, do you think it is something you would consider adding to your site?

*** UPDATE AFTER READING FIRST FEW COMMENTS – PLEASE HELP *** One thing I have found from people not living in the US is that very few ads appear and more often no ads appear at all when someone clicks on a text link. Can you do me a favor and test a couple for me and let me know in the comments section what Country you live in, and if any ads displayed. You can just click on these 2 keywords… Make Money from Home and Mira Mesa Real Estate. I would think Make Money from Home should produce results for everyone as that it has worldwide interest… so I am interested to see your results. I do not want you to click on the ads… I just want to know if people outside the US can see the ads.

THANKS!

It looks interesting Doug, but I’m not sure I’m clear on how it works. I had a look at your site, I saw the links and clicked on one to see where it would take me. It took me to a page that was devoid of everything bar the header.

Also, if I come up with a bunch of keywords for my site, do I submit it so that the advertisers link relative sites to those same keywords?

That’s odd Sire. What link did you click on? I just clicked them all and they all took me to a page filled with ads like the last image in my post.

As for how it works… the main thing you need to do is create a results page, where you copy and paste their code. If you have ever created a custom Google search box… it is similar to that. I am not sure who the company has partnered with but is someone like Google that has massive amounts of advertisers on board, and when someone click on their ad… you get a percentage of whatever the advertiser is paying for that click. Just how Adsense works.

Once you come up with your list of keywords, you just customize each keywords link to match your keyword. For example… mouseover the following link and see how it is written: Make Money from Home Does that link provide results for you?

  2. Sire on Fri, 28th Aug 2009 1:33 am

Firstly there was no link for me to mouseover that I could see.

Secondly that link I clicked on was the Mira Mesa Jobs. I disabled my ad blocker to make sure that wasn’t causing the problem. I’ve been waiting a few minutes now and all I get is the header complete with tabs and apart from that it’s blank.

I did notice that it was trying to load pluckit demanmedia.com, or something of the sort.

No idea on that one Sire. Are you using Firefox or IE? I wonder if anyone else is experiencing the same thing as you, as it works perfectly for me :(

  3. Sire on Fri, 28th Aug 2009 2:06 am

Firefox. I just tried using Google Chrome and nothing on the jobs link. One ad appeared on the Real Estate and two on the Hotels link. Perhaps its because I’m an Aussie. I noticed before that some ads don’t appear to me because of that?

That is totally what it is. Mira Mesa is a community in San Diego and there is no reason why people would advertise it around the world. Did you try the Make Money from Home link above? That should work.

That’s real nice..but when I clicked on any keyword..I was sent to another page and it was blank…even on other three sites that same thing…any reasons?

Where do you live? I am wondering if it has to do with the country you live in. I will contact the owners and learn more.

I am from India..I checked again..but still I cannot see any ads..

It definitely must be a geographical issue. It won’t work very well if it doesn’t produce ads in all countries… that’s for sure!

It might work on my MiraMesa.com site, as most of the traffic is local… so I assume it works for most people that visit there. Probably would not be good for this site though… as people visit from around the world.

I sent an email to the owner to see what he has to say.

          Thanks for helping :)

I’m not having any issues and the system worked the way it should. I clicked the ads and went right to the page they Doug is showing here in his blog.

    I don’t know how it’s not working for you guys that’s odd…

Either way working or not I woudl never replace Google with this program. I love Google Ad sense it pays me monthly

I think it has to do with where they live in the world, but I am not sure. I am going to ask.

I wouldn’t use it myself to replace Adsense, as they have been very good to me too :) I just really like how they used it in those 3 examples I mentioned in the post and I can see its potential. So I would use it along with Google to add some extra earning potential. But I am only testing this. It could pay really good or it could pay like crap. We will have to wait and see.

Well it does sound interesting Doug. I guess that not for our types of blogs since we know who our readers are but yes for other types of sites. Do you think it could work for Hiburrito? I’m getting a lot of traffic from Search Engines.

  7. Stefan on Fri, 28th Aug 2009 11:35 am

Interesting idea and I think this can work great if you place the keywords as a menu. I am a bit interested in writing a review since I am always looking for new methods to make money online but I guess this only works in English?

So did any of the links work for you Stefan… on MiraMesa.com or the links above? Did you get ads on the results page?

This is still in beta testing, so I would think eventually it would work all over the world… but we will see.

      • Stefan on Fri, 28th Aug 2009 12:44 pm

I used workathomecommunity.com, which worked just as you described. Is it possible to get ads for random keywords or do you have to chose them on forehand? If it is possible to get them automatically you could place them besides your results when people are using your search engine.

Well, do you have to choose keywords on the monetization program site or is it possible to get ads for whichever keyword you want without having to add it on their site?

If it is possible to get ads for every keyword you can add a extra sidebar with them on search page.

I just wish Adsense would let you choose your own keywords and list them however you would like. I have heard talk that they might do something like that someday… which would be awesome.

Someone has to be the Guinea pig… so why shouldn’t it be me? So do ads appear when you click on the text links? I don’t want you to click on the ads… I just want to know if they appear if you click on the text links.

So basically, you put up the ad links (kinda make it look like a menu or something related to the site), people click it, and they get to a page with related ads, right?

I tried clicking them, and I also just get the top header – no content below, no ads or anything. But I’m also from outside US, so maybe that’s why :)
