A Newbies Journey to Making Money Online (Part 4)

“Getting Started Series” (Part 1d) – A Newbies Journey to Making Money Online… Lessons Learned!

(…continued for Part 1c which you should read first)

I am sure that story ended a little abruptly for many of you, and I am sorry… but I know more than a few people that have had very similar stories to Johnny’s, and that’s how their making money online journey ended… they just gave up. I have spoken with lots of people that have started online businesses over the years, and many of them have had very similar experiences to Johnny’s. Some of them made it to a year or more, while others gave up in only a month, but their stories each ended the same.

Now I did not write this to discourage you from starting an online business, but I wanted to show you the fate of a large percent of the people that start out trying to make money online. Hopefully you can learn from Johnny’s mistakes (which we will go over) and that will “hopefully” help you in starting your online venture. So let’s go over some of the things that Johnny did wrong…

He jumped at the first thing that came along – Johnny did no research whatsoever when he started out. He typed in the search term, “Making Money Online” into Google and clicked on an ad saying he can earn $25,000 a month sitting on the beach… and he was sold. If Johnny were smart, he would have done a lot more investigating before jumping into any business. He could have visited blogs and forums to see what other ways people are making money online to see what the best fit for him was. There are lots of ways to make money online, and if you are looking to make a lot of money fast… it most likely will not happen as a blogger. I’m not saying you can’t make a lot of money blogging, because it is definitely possible, but it takes time and a lot of work… and it’s not for everyone.

He chose a niche he knew nothing about – Here’s a big mistake a lot of bloggers and internet marketers make, and Johnny did as well. Johnny chose a niche that he thought would make him the most money, even though he knew nothing at all about the subject. When starting an online or offline business you want to start one in a niche you really know well and hopefully love. One of my favorite quotes is, “Do what you love, and the money will follow”. Why not start your online venture in a business you are passionate about, so you can enjoy the time and effort you put into it?

He put no time or effort into choosing a domain name – Choosing a good domain name is a very important step when starting your business and Johnny put no time or effort into it at all. There are many factors to be considered when selecting a domain… which we will go over in more detail later in this Getting Started series. Let’s just say that Johnny’s way of grabbing the first domain that he found available probably wasn’t the best way to go.

He had unreal expectations – Okay… Johnny was a little mislead by the blogging course’s sales page, as he thought he would start making money online right away. He and every one of you just starting out (on your online adventure) needs to know that making money online takes time and effort on your part. There is no getting around it. There might be that one in a zillion person that stumbles across some huge money maker with not much effort, but the odds of that happening are like you winning the lottery. So before you get started you need to know that it will take a while until you start making a lot of money online and you will have to work to accomplish it… and not everyone will. As for me, I would recommend giving yourself at least a year before you see any significant amount of income coming in… especially for you bloggers out there.

He had no kind of schedule – When Johnny started out… he started with a bang. Some nights after he got home from his 9 to 5 day job he would stay up until 3am working on his online business. The next day at work he would be tired all day… which would make the job he didn’t like even less enjoyable to be at. What happened to Johnny happens to many new internet entrepreneurs. They start out working super hard, (putting in a ton of hours) and when success doesn’t come fast… they slowly start getting discouraged, and each week start putting in less and less time and effort into their business.

The smart thing to do is to create a schedule for yourself right from the beginning. Decide how many hours you want to put into your online venture each night and what days you want to take off… and try and stick to that the best you can. Maybe put 2 – 4 hours a night aside to work on your business and take the weekends off… it is totally up to you. Just don’t burn yourself out!

As a blogger you might want to put certain days aside to write posts and other days to leave comments and work on other tasks. It is a good practice to publish your posts on a consistent schedule, so your readers know what days to expect a new post from you. You can post once a week, every day of the week, or any amount in between… just try and keep it consistent each week.

For the internet marketers and the rest of you… you also want to create a schedule for your business activities. If you have a project that needs to be completed on a certain date… divide it up in manageable sections and give yourself a certain amount of time each night to complete each task. That is way easier then trying to get as much stuff as you can do… done in one night.

Throwing in the towel too soon – You hear these types of stories all the time… where someone was just about to give up on their business and it finally becomes super successful, and then others that gave up just before their businesses was about to take off. Now in Johnny’s case, could he have made his business work? Probably… but it would have taken a lot of time and a lot of effort on his part. I think it was better that Johnny stopped working on that particular project and hopefully he finds something to do that he really enjoys.

Hopefully you learned a few things from this story. I didn’t write it to discourage anyone from doing whatever they want to do to make money online. I wrote it to help you avoid some of the pitfalls that many new and old online entrepreneurs fall into when they start their online ventures.

Next in my “Getting Started” series I will go over some of the basics things you will need to know to get online business started like; how to choose your niche, registering a domain name, getting your domain hosted, what type of website you should start, some simple techniques to start making money online, etc…

I think you covered the beginner mistakes extremely well. By reading Johnny’s online adventures, I can see several people for my eyes that I know has been in his shoes, more or less, at least.

I’m looking forward to the next post in your getting started series. It’s some good stuff, keep it up :)

Thanks Klaus! Yeah… there are a lot of people in Johnny’s shoes floating around the web. The great thing for them and anyone just starting out is they can always learn from these lessons and start on a new path.

I definitely can identify with Johnny. All the excitement of getting started on a blog, and not a minute to waste before he could start making some big bucks and leave the 9-5, so he hurried into his domain name, etc. Looking forward to the rest!

Thanks Christie. I think everyone can probably relate one way or another with poor Johnny. I am hoping he and others will learn from his mistake and succeed at whatever they try next.

Real estate scammers like Carlton Sheets made millions with his “buy homes with nothing down” scam, knowing that about 1/10th of 1% of real estate investors had the wherewithal to do it. These people are blood suckers and they will answer for it…eventually!

That’s so funny you mentioned Carlton Sheets. My old roommate Scott purchased his course many years ago and has made millions in real estate over the years. Seriously… He negotiated all sorts of crazy deals that I thought were impossible. Of course he is one of the 1/10 of 1% you were talking about. I wish I was one of them :)

I honestly think a lot of the money making courses out there will work for people, but it is like anything else… only certain people will follow through with all that it takes to be successful. Of course there are a ton of crappy products out there as well… but most have a least a little to teach us.

I love Anthony Robbins and have purchased most of his books and Personal Power courses. I remember him saying something like less than 1% of the people that purchase his Personal Power course ever make it to the 2nd or 3rd CD (or tape) and there are several. Now I don’t think he is a scammer because the people who purchased his products did not follow through. The sad truth is most people don’t have the drive to follow through. I think it just makes them feel better to purchase these courses even if they never do anything with them.

Hi Doug, I think that it’s very good advice to have a schedule for blogging. You must treat it like you would a business, because if you’re trying to make any money at all, that’s exactly what it is! It’s a business! Businesses have work hours, days off, goals, business plans, etc.

I think I will write a post about having a schedule, because it’s a topic that’s not discussed nearly enough on the blogosphere.

Thanks Trey! Scheduling is an important part of success (IMO), as it makes life a lot less stressful as you know when you are suppose to do certain tasks… and for me, it makes my wife happy, which is most important!

Definitely would make a good post :)

    Spot on.

I think most begginers always make these kind of mistakes, they don’t research and enter a niche they know nothing about. When they realise they made the wrong decision they just give up and never look back, but instead of giving up why not try working hard and start putting a bit of effort in to actually treat it like a business.

Doug, you listed out almost all the mistakes that every newbie blogger would do, I’ve gone through a few mistakes that you mentioned above too. The moral that I learned in this 2 years was “there is no free lunch in this world, no shortcut to success!”.

This would be a great post for many newbies who just started their make money online journey.

    Regards,
    Lee

If you think blogging is tough, try the real estate thing. I’m glad that your friend did well but guys like Sheets prey on the majority of people who will not follow thru. He makes it sound like any idiot can do what he preaches, when only a small percentage of really hard workers have a chance in hell. Just like bloggers

You could never get me to try the Real Estate invseting thing… too many headaches.

That is true… they do make it seem like anyone can do it, and as we know, most people don’t follow through. It was just funny you mentioned Carlton Sheets, as that was the one course my friend bought. Definitely not for everyone!!!

Nice wrap-up Doug. I have to admit that after reading the first three parts ( must for everyone BTW), I fortunately anticipated these mistakes already. Unfortunately, I made most of these mistakes myself. Luckily, I made the smart choice (hopefully) when deciding to move on and learn from these mistakes. One thing is for sure, there is absolutely no short cut for success.

Looking forward to your getting started series. Always good to recycle:)

Oh Okay..So In this part you have told what mistakes he did ..

I think the major mistakes which he did was that he had unreal expectations and had no proper schedule…

Expecting something in which you don’t give your time properly would never result in something Good to you. Also I don’t like that blogger give up so early like in just 6 months which is hardly some time in which you can expect something good to happen..

I enjoyed reading this series. It rings so true. All the make money quick products mislead people into thinking that earning money online is a trouble free endeavor. It certainly is not.

As a publisher, I love the work but find that scheduling my work is the most difficult part. Not enough hours in the day to get it all done.
